MORE THAN JUST A SPACE

FeaturedMORE THAN JUST A SPACE

SPACE IS A SIMPLE WORD COMPRISING DEFINITIONS OF DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES.ACCORDING TO THE DICTIONARY SPACE IS A VACUUM THAT SURROUNDS US. THE QUESTION IS HOW ARCHITECTS DECODE A SPACE? WELL THERE ARE CERTAIN STEPS, FIRST IT HAS ITS PHYSICAL FORM THAT CAN BE EASILY DECODED AND DESCRIBED BY CHARACTERISTICS SUCH AS LENGTH, WIDTH,SCALE, GEOMETRY, TEXTURE, COLOR, LIGHT ETC.SECONDLY, IT HAS OTHER CHARACTERS THAT ARE ABSTRACT AND COMPLEX, AND DIFFICULT TO TALK ABOUT. THESE CODES, RULES AND ABSTRACT PARTS SHAPING MEANINGFUL THINGS IN SPACE.

SPACE IS MORE THAN A SIMPLE VOLUME THAT SURROUNDS US. PEOPLE TRY TO UNDERSTAND SPACE EITHER BY ITS PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OR BY THEIR PERSONAL FEELINGS ABOUT IT. SPACE IS A SPECIFIED AND DEFINED AREA WHERE HUMAN LIVES-WHICH EN CAVES LIFE. SPACE IS MEANINGLESS WITHOUT FOOTPRINTS OF ANY INHABITANTS- OF HUMANS , ANIMALS OR ANY TANGIBLE/INTANGIBLE THING.ACCORDING TO PHILOSOPHER IMMANUEL KANT, SPACE IS A “PRIORI”,IT IS EVERYWHERE AND EVERYTHING IS IN IT,T HOLDS EVERYTHING THAT OUR EYES CAN BOUND TO. BUT ARCHITECTURE DEFINES SPACE AS VOLUME OR GAP BETWEEN FLOORS, CEILING AND WALLS.
THE WORLD VIEW ABOUT SPACE IS CONTINUOUSLY BEEN CHANGING FROM TIME TO TIME. IN LATER MEDIEVAL AND EARLY RENAISSANCE PERIOD SPACE WAS WELL DEFINED BY OVERLAPPING OBJECTS. IN DUCCIO MAESTA’S ALTARPIECE ,PAINTED FOR SCIENE CATHEDRAL IN 1301, THERE IS A GIANT VIRGIN WITH A BOY IN THE MIDDLE THAT ARE ENTHRONED AND SURROUNDED BY SAINTS RAISING THEIR GESTURES TOWARDS THE VIRGIN. IN THIS PAINTING THE SAINTS AND ANGLES , AND THE VIRGIN OBVIOUSLY OCCUPIES THE SAME SPACE. BUT, THE MOMENT WE SEE THE VIRGIN, IT LOOKS BIGGER THAN THE SAINTS SURROUNDING HER. THERE COULD BE TWO POSSIBLE REASON FOR THIS, EITHER THE VIRGIN IS A GIANT OR THE SAINTS AND VIRGIN DOES NOT OCCUPY THE SAME SPACE. IN EARLY RENAISSANCE PERIOD THE STYLE OF GIVING SENSE OF SPACE IN PAINTINGS WAS BY OVERLAPPING OBJECTS THAT OCCUPY SAME SPACE. LATER, THE REPRESENTATION OF SPACE BEGIN TO CHANGE AND SHOWING DEPTH IN PAINTINGS CAME TO PICTURE, WHERE PAINTERS TRY TO RELATE SPACE WITH SHOWING DEPTH IN PAINTINGS AND ALSO ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES LIKE ARCHES, CEILING DOORS AND WINDOWS AFFECT THE REPRESENTATION SENSE OF SPACE.CHITNAVIS CENTER

SCIENTISTS VIEW SPACE OBJECTIVELY. THEY BELIEVE THE EARTH IS AN OBJECT AND SPACE IS A THING AROUND IT WHICH CAN BE MEASURED. THIS HAS NOT TO DO ANYTHING WITH HUMAN PSYCHOLOGY OR FEELINGS. THE SPACE WE FEEL WILL BE TOTALLY DIFFERENT THAN THE SPACE SCIENTISTS MEASURE. SOME MODERN WORLD VIEWS DESCRIBE SPACE AS AN ENDLESS ENTITY. IT EXTENDS INFINITELY IN ALL DIRECTIONS.EVERYTHING IN THIS UNIVERSE (OR BEYOND) IS WITHIN SPACE AND WE OCCUPY THE SAME SPACE. SPACE OCCUPIES EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING, IT IS LIMITLESS AND EXTENDS INFINITELY. IT IS IMPORTANT TO TAKE IN ACCOUNT THE DEPTH OF SPACE AND TO UNDERSTAND ITS IMPORTANCE.SOME PAINTINGS OF RENAISSANCE PERIOD SHOW DEPTH OF SPACE BY OVERLAPPING THE OBJECTS, ALSO THE PAINTERS OF THIS PERIOD DEPICTS DEPTH BY GIVING TEXTURES OF DIFFERENT GRADES OR BY SHOWING ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES LIKE DOORS, WINDOW, AND ARCHES. SOME MODERNISTS ALSO DEFINE DEPTH OF SPACE IN FACADES OF BUILDINGS. ONE FAMOUS EXAMPLE IS VILLA STEIN BY LE CORBUSEIR, WHERE HE PLAYED WITH PLANES BY OVERLAPPING THEM AND GIVING SPECIFIC DISTANCE BETWEEN THEM.
HOW HUMAN PERCEIVE A SPACE IS AN IMPORTANT FACTOR, DEFINITION OF SPACE CAN CHANGE PERSON TO PERSON IN ACCORDANCE WITH HIS/HER PERSPECTIVE. THEY MAY BE MORE INCLINED TOWARDS THE FEELING OF TYPE OF ENCLOSER OR BY VISUAL CONNECTIVITY.HENCE DE MARKING OF A SPACE IS IMPORTANT, AND THAT CAN BE DONE IN MANY WAYS, SPACE CAN BE DEFINED BY DEMARKING ITS BOUNDRIES OR DIFFERNTLY TREATING THE BASE PLANE, OR BY CREATING A SPACEFRAME BY DEMARKING THE CORNER POINTS OF SPACE ( CAN BE SEEN IN TAJ MAHAL, AGRA AND HAGIA SOPHIA, AFGANISTAN)

OPENING OF SPACES PLAYS A SPATIAL ROLE IN DEFINING A SPACE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ACTIVITY THE SPACE SERVES TO.FOR EXAMPLE AN ENCLOSED ROOM WITH ONLY A SMALL WINDOW WILL GIVE EXPRESSION OF HOPE, OR EXPRESSION OF A NEED, FEAR, LONELYNESS, CLOSED, COMPRESSED, SHRINKED,HELPLESS. WHEREAS A ROOM HAVING LARGE OPENINGS WILL GIVE AN HAPPY, WELCOMING, OPEN, FREE, STRETCHED, FREE EXPRESSION. OPENINGS ARE IMPORTANT AS A LIGHT & VENILATION SOURCE FOR SPACE AND GIVES BEST VIEWS OF OUTSIDE.

ARCHICULTURE

Architecture and culture are bounded to each other since human evolved 13 million years ago. These two things cant be separated from each other, they both need each other to breath.

CULTURE is what? its a lifestyle, the way human live and develops, the way it affects other human beings and hence creates a society having same thoughts. this has a huge impact on the way human lives, and to live he needed a space where he can accommodate his kind of living. hence, he made his own house that gives him comfortable living. Many such houses came together, as human lives in group, to form a settlement. As time grew many factors started to affect the kind of living-culture-like economy, social behavior, climate, technology,  inventions, and mythologies. These factors have different impacts on architecture of different regions, since the world have different climatic zones, giving rise to different cultures. this relationship between architecture and culture can be seen in early civilizations also, like Mohenjo-daro, Harrappa, Babylon, Ur etc. The relation between house form and culture is best explored by Ar. Amos Rapopot and can be seen in his book House Form and Culture.

The architecture today is more inclined towards technology and using it to give thermal comfort to the occupants, called the Green buildings. The modern era has a totally different culture from what humans had million years ago, influenced by culture and driven by technology. Some master Architects like Ken yang, Christopher Charles , Big Architects(firm) and many others are helping to make this society  a better place to live by creating green buildings.

The culture today or what we call MODERN CULTURE is very much influenced by nature. humans intention now is to live with the nature without affecting it by technological advancements (since he realized the impacts after industrial revolution). In my perspective architecture make culture and cultures makes architecture. And so forming ARCHICULTURE.

TALE OF A CAMERA

The biggest gift of mankind to itself is the “CAMERA” which posses the  power to capture precious memories.its not just an object that one should have, its the thing that everyone wants to have so that he can capture and protect his memories in form of photographs and look back on them after many years and live those moments again.

The first partially successful photograph of a camera image was made in approximately 1816 by Nicéphore Niépce, using a very small camera of his own making and a piece of paper coated with silver chloride, which darkened where it was exposed to light. thanks to this man that started a revolution and as generation passed many others like Niepce came forward with modified cameras , the size of camera began to shrink and now we all have got a nano camera fitted in our cellphones. camera produces the hard copy of image captured and is globally known as a PHOTOGRAPH.  A photograph or photo is an image created by light falling on a light-sensitive surface, usually photographic film or an electronic medium such as a CCD or a CMOS chip. Most photographs are created using a camera, which uses a lens to focus the scene’s visible wavelengths of light into a reproduction of what the human eye would see. The process and practice of creating photographs is called photography. The word “photograph” was coined in 1839 by Sir John Herschel and is based on the Greek φῶς (phos), meaning “light”, and γραφή (graphê), meaning “drawing, writing”, together meaning “drawing with light”.

people have different perspectives, some relate camera with life, some say ‘ it teaches people how to see without a camera’, yeah i appreciate their sayings, apart  from all i believe camera helps to recreate or regenerate the lost moments in your mind, it takes you  in an imaginary world of hidden old memories deep in your heart, it rejuvenates your youth, it encourages you to see more of ahead.

when I look at my old pictures, all I can see is what I used to be but am no longer. I think: What I can see is what I am not.  As I have practiced it, photography produces pleasure by simplicity. I see something special and show it to the camera. A picture is produced. The moment is held until someone sees it. Then it is theirs.

marry-go-round

marry-go-round has been all time favorite ride for young one as well as the old ones. well it gives a great experience and yeah its really attractive big circle with colorful lights. Here’s a great story of my life that i can never forget about the giant circle of light.

while i was 10 year old girl , i always ask my parents to go out with me to the fair, and every year i hangout with my big brother and mom at the fair, i always use to wonder how the big giant circle rotates? and what if it fell down, we will all get hurt……so i was really afraid of that gian circular beast, but one day while we were standing near the marry-go-round, my mom pointed towards a group of kids that were going into the giant circle and they were all so happy and excited…..mom said if you want the whole world down to your feet, u must go and have a ride in marry-go-round, she said all things will shrink when u see them from the very top…….then i did tried it……and when i reached at the top of so called marry-go-round i realized all the things are so small when i look them from here and i can actually see my house from there. and while it was going down the booze of cool air touched my hairs and i was like ‘whoooo!!!! this is cool”

from that day i use to ask my parents to go out with me for the ride i love the most, MARRY-GO-ROUND

now here i am ,the above images i have captured with my nikon D3200 in a fair at nagpur, reshambagh ground, and yeah i also rode it thrice that day.

mother nature

mother nature

nature posses beauty that mesmerizes us, it has hidden secrets of beauty. it shows us her beauty in different ways, all we need is to look around, all things around us in nature inspires, if we take a deep look within it.

for me the best season when natures reveals all its beauty is the rainy season, and yeah spring. when during rain the raindrop falls from over a leaf, it looks just stunning as like the leaf was just waiting for some water droplet to touch and make his life heaven, for him its the magical droplets falling over it straight from heaven.

And yeah its true if u really love nature, u will surely find beauty everywhere and in everything. and it keeps on changing, it inspires us, it makes us feel relaxed, it takes away all the stress and pain the brutal world has given…….you just go outside feel the love that nature always give you.
